Administrative HistoryCaptain James Stewart was interested in the origin and history of the place names of Southern Europe and Asia. He worked in the late nineteenth century, translating works of earlier authors and historians, and compiling his own research notes. No further details of his life and work have been established - it is not known if his work was ever published. He was commissioned into the 16th Lancers in the late 19th century. He seems to have been stationed in the Orient and Afghanistan at various times, and took a keen interest in the philology of the countries in which he worked. He died shortly before 1922.
