Administrative HistoryDavid Masson was born in Aberdeen in 1822 and educated at Aberdeen Grammar School, Marischal College, Aberdeen (MA 1839), and Edinburgh University. He began work as a journalist in Aberdeen from 1842 to 1844, then moved into literary work in Edinburgh and London. He became Professor of English Literature at University College, London, in 1853, holding the post until 1865 when he was appointed Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at Edinburgh University, a post he held for thirty years. He wrote chiefly on poets and essayists, also edited certain volumes of the "Register of the Privy Council of Scotland", and held the post of Historiographer Royal for Scotland from 1893. He died in Edinburgh in 1907.
