DescriptionTwo volumes containing the complete set of Ogston's general medical notes for teaching surgery for the period 1882 - ?1886.

The volumes are similar to surgery class teaching notes [see MS 3760/1], with a small number of apparent additions, including notes on laryngscope & ear demonstration, ophthalmoscope [?apparently, one of the posts Ogston held in Aberdeen was Lecturer in Ophthalmology] and notes on illustrations [which includes demonstrations] used in the teaching of surgery class [illustrations used for teaching operative surgery can be found in operative surgery volume number 2]. Volumes include notes relating to symptoms, nature, pathology, causes and treatment of inflictions that required surgery. Also includes many references to medical texts and journals, including 'Holmes'; 'Lancet'; British Medical Journal; 'Gray' & 'Erichsen'. Volumes contain a few surgical & medical illustrations & diagrams.

See the item - level descriptions for a list of subjects contained in each volume.

Ogston sometimes refers to the next subject that was to be taught in the surgery class, which is not necessarily in the same volume.

The teaching notes in these volumes have been scored out, ?presumably by Ogston, which suggests that the notes were superceded by later ones.

Includes details on Ogston's preparations for classes:
'General Arrangement of Course and its relation to time'
Annotated: 'Demonstration ?fortnightly on Friday from 2 to 4 Practical Surgery Class after New Year: Theoretical Mon & Wed to .P.M. Practical Tu & Th 3 to 4 & 5:6'.
This lists the lectures [approximately 55] in chronological order and indicates whether each lecture was to be taught in first or second year, or in both years. Also indicates the minutes or number of days it would take Ogston to teach the individual classes. Included in the list of lectures are
lectures on 'Operative Surgery Class'.

Includes subsequent lists which note the 'order of subjects taught' for first - third year. The third year list relating to diseases of eyes, goitre, genito - urinary diseases & diseases & injuries of nerves is annotated: 'Prof. A. O. [Alexander Ogston] absent in Soudan [?Sudan]'.

Also includes details on 'Examinations': for 'Winter' - 'First Prize Examination Saturday before Christmas. Second Prize Examination 2nd [Saturday] of March. Keith Gold Medal 1st [Saturday of] March. Peter Shepherd Gold Medal 3rd Saturday of March'. Annotated, '1. ?Retry Order Shepherd & Keith Medals'. For 'Summer' - 'First Prize Examination 1st Saturday of June. Second Prize Examination 1st Saturday of July'.

Volumes include some later annotations on slips of paper, dated circa 1883 - 1887, which refer to medical texts & articles; the causes, pathology & treatments of various inflictions; surgical procedures & a few surgical diagrams. The slips are inserted throughout the volumes, presumably relating to the repeated delivery of Ogston's lectures. The volumes are bound, with 'Diary or Log-Book' & 'Log Book', respectively, in gold inscription on the front cover.
