| Administrative History | Francis Adams was born in 1796 at Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire, and educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and King’s College, Aberdeen, graduating MA and acquiring a devotion to the study of the classics. He then studied medicine and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, London, though he returned to practise in Banchory-Ternan. He remained there for the rest of his life, devoting his time to his medical work (in which he continued to study and write, as well as to practise) and to classical studies, particularly philology and Greek medicine. He studied, revised and translated Greek texts on medicine and conspicuously contributed to study in the field. He also had a keen interest in botany. He died in Banchory-Ternan in 1861, whereupon a memorial was raised to him in the town. |
