Administrative HistoryBorn in 1670, William Mitchell was minister of two churches in Edinburgh, the Canongate in 1695 and Old Kirk in 1708, before being called to the second charge of St. Giles, the High Kirk, in 1718. He was moderator of the General Assembly on six occasions from 1710 to 1726. He died, still at St. Giles, in 1727.
SourceThe diary was found in the archives amongst the papers of Colin MacLaurin (1698-1746), c. 1851, in Marischal College Library and had probably been presented with the papers by Sir Andrew Mitchell (1708-1771), William's son and McLaurin's executor.
DescriptionDiary belonging to Reverend William Mitchell kept during a brief visit to London, accompanied by Reverend William Hamilton, on behalf of a commission of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, 'to endeavore redress of grivances of the Church', arising from the Patronage Act (10 Ann. c. 21), the Toleration Act (10 Ann. c. 6) and other measures concerning the church (February - April 1717).

Physical DescriptionThe diary (9.6 x 15.7 cm) contains 16 folios and is bound in leather with tooling on the front and back and is lettered in gold on the spine: 'Mitchell's Diary 1717'.
