| Description | Slide shows ten microscopic diagrams of 'Cell division by mitosis'.
Cells are labelled in the diagrams 1- 10; cells in 1-6 are single; 7 - 10 show the activity of two pairs of cells in each.
Title below image reads: 'Fig. 72 - Cell division by mitosis. The figure shows rather schematically the chief stages of the mitotic cell division in an organism with four chromosones in each of the cells of the body. (1) Resting nucelus before the commencement of division. (2) Spindle forming and the four chromosones distinct each with the beginnings of a longitudinal split. (3) The spindle extends across the centre of the cell, the membrane enclosing the nucleus has disappeared and the chromosones are becoming short and thick. (4) The compact chromosones lie along the equator of the cell. (5) Chromosones separating, cell elongating. (6) Cell beginning to divide, daughter chromosones beginining to become diffuse and run together to form two new nuclei. (7) Cell division complete and daughter nuclei entering a new resting phase.' |
