TitleReprint: 'Notes on stone in the bladder' by D. F. Keegan
Date1897
Extent1 item
DescriptionCopy of reprint D. F. Keegan, 'Notes on Stone in the Bladder', reprinted from 'The Lancet' (1897), 3 - 22. Signed by Keegan [F.R.C.S. Eng., Brigade - Surgeon - Lieutenant - Colonel, Indian Medical Service (Retired)]. Reprint mentions Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Forbes Keith (on pages 4 & 8). Reprint probably sent to the Keiths, as 'South Kensington' is written on the last page.

The reprint in part relates to contemporary medical treatment of calculi in the bladder in girls & women and reveals to an extent some contemporary opinions about the status of some women: in case 8, page 5: 'A low -caste Hindu brought his daughter aged seven years to the Indore Hospital on March 12th, 1889, suffering from very urgent stone symptoms [...] The girl resided in the city of Indore, and her father took her home the same evening much against the advice and wishes of my assistant, saying, as he left the hospital, that he could not afford to spend any more time on his daughter. If his son had undergone a litholapaxy he would doubtless have spent three or four days in looking after him in the hospital. After all, there is much to be said for woman's rights, and even something for the new woman'.
