| Administrative History | John Cadenhead Leslie was baptised on the 26th April 1845, son of Thomas Leslie, carpenter and ships-master and Ann Cadenhead. Leslie married Margaret Coutts in 1869 and they had a son John Coutts Leslie, born 1874. Margaret died on 6th January 1898. In 1899, Leslie remarried to Margaret Hector and they had two sons. Leslie died on 26th October 1918.
Leslie had gone to sea at the age of c.14 and stopped sailing around aged 50. A ship's husband was an agent appointed by the owner of a ship, and invested with authority to make the requisite repairs, and attend to the management, equipment, and other concerns of the ship.
Leslie sailed around Britain and all over the world: America, Argentina, British Guiana (Guyana), Burma (Myanmar), Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Norway, Philippines, Peru, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and Uruguay.
Following his career at sea, Leslie became a ship's broker. |
