Administrative History"The origin of this fund is a mortification by Dr William Guild dated 19th December 1656 confirmed by deed of his sister Christian Guild on 13 November 1666, by which a wadset of one thousand merks due by James Rolland on 'the half croft at the Crabstone', paying therefor 10 bolls of bere yearly, was conveyed to the Hospital and Poor of Old Aberdeen equally and a tenement on the east side of Old Aberdeen to the Hospital. [...] The tenement was sold by the Hospital to John Clerk in 1800, see Minute of 4th December 1800 and account from February 1800 to January 1901" (Bain)

Bain notes that at the time of his memorandum (1931) "there are six women on Dr Guild's mortification list who receive five shillings at Christmas yearly".
DescriptionCopy writs of Dr Guild's mortification

In 1656 Dr William Guild made a deed of mortification to the Hospital in Old Aberdeen under which six women were to receive 5 shillings annually at Christmas. This bundle contains two contemporary notarial copy writs of this mortification:

1. Attested double mortification by Dr William Guild to the Hospital and Poor of Old Aberdeen, 19 December 1656

2. Attested double disposition by Christian Guild, sister and heir of the late Dr William Guild, confirming the above mortification, 12 November 1666
