Sir Alexander Ogston's grandfather, Alexander Ogston, set up a soap manufacturer's in Aberdeen around 1803. The company merged with that of John Tennant in 1898 and was taken over by Lever Brothers in the early 20th century. He married Helen Milne. Sir Alexander Ogston's father, Professor Francis Ogston (bap. 1803, d. 1887), was a physician and professor of medical jurisprudence at Aberdeen University. In 1841 he married Amelia Cadenhead (d.1852), the daughter of Alexander Cadenhead, procurator fiscal for Aberdeen. Francis Ogston was also appointed Aberdeen City police surgeon in 1831 and was the Medical Officer of Health for Aberdeen from 1862-81. His other son, Francis (Frank) Ogston, became professor of public health and forensic medicine at Otago University, New Zealand.
Professor Alexander Ogston (1844-1929) was married twice: to Mary Jane Hargrave in 1867 and Isabella Margaret Matthews in 1877. Mary Jane Hargrave (1848-1873) was the daughter of James Hargrave of Stoke Newington, Chief Factor of the Hudson Bay Company. They had two sons and two daughters. Isabella Margaret Matthews (b.1847/8) was the daughter of James Matthews, architect. They had four sons and three daughters.
Children of Sir Alexander Ogston and Mary Jane Hargrave:
Mary Letitia Ogston (1867/8-1937) married Herbert Grierson (1866-1960) on 2 September 1896. Sir Herbert Grierson graduated from Aberdeen University in 1887; became lecturer in English in 1893 and first professor of English in 1894; Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at Edinburgh University, 1915-1935; elected rector of Edinburgh University, 1936-39; knighted in 1936 (see MS 2478).
Francis Hargrave Ogston (b.1869) was killed in action during the Boer War. A trooper in the Imperial Light Horse, 1st Battalion, he was killed at Rietkuil on 17 April 1901. His name is inscribed on Clifton College Boer War Memorial in Bristol.
Flora Mactavish Ogston (b.1872) married George Carter.
Walter Henry Ogston (b.1873) married Josephine Elizabeth Carter on 16 Dec 1909 in London and they had six children together: Sandy, Flora, Elizabeth, Walter, Josephine and Janet. Flora Ogston married John Philpot - their son Andrew Philpot collected the papers of Sir Alexander Ogston and deposited them with the University of Aberdeen. Walter (Mac) Ogston was a lecturer at Aberdeen University.

Cadenhead family:
Josephine Elizabeth Ogston (née Carter) married Walter Henry Ogston, Sir Alexander Ogston's son, in 1909. Her uncle was James Cadenhead, artist. He was the brother of Josephine's mother Alice.
Carter family:
Josephine Elizabeth Carter (1886-1962) married Walter Henry Ogston, son of Sir Alexander Ogston, in 1909. She was the youngest daughter of William Henry Carter (d.1896), merchant in China, and Alice Gray Carter (née Cadenhead).
Hargrave family:
Mary Jane Hargrave (1848-1873) married Alexander Ogston in 1867. She was the daughter of James Hargrave of Stoke Newington, chief factor of the Hudson Bay Company. They had two sons and two daughters [see Ogston family].
MacTavish family:
The MacTavish branch of the Ogston family can be traced back to the mother of Sir Alexander Ogston's first wife, Mary Jane Hargrave. Her mother was Letitia Mactavish and married James Hargrave.
Matthews family:
