Description | Col. James Seton of Maitlandfield by Haddington, of the family of the Earls of Dunfermline, wished to receive from the Duke of Gordon a payment representing the balance payable for the purchase of the Lordship of Urquhart from the Dunfermline family. However the Earl of Fife had an outstanding claim against the Urquhart estate dating from 1706 and the resultant legal dispute was preventing the settlement of Seton's claim. The correspondence relates to this claim (the "Dunfermline debt"). |
