DescriptionLetter from John Ellis, Gray's Inn, London, to David Skene in which he refers to activities of Mr Jeans and remarks that he is not in a position to help him in his collection; he has no spare plates of the balani but will get one done as soon as he obtains the copper plate; he discusses barnacles and corallines, some of which he has sent to Skene including an eschara with two celliferous corallines and an eschara or flustra with single cells; he will look over Skene's list once he has finished his arrangement of the fuci; he is looking for a sea pen for the Duchess of Portland but it would need to be put straight into spirits otherwise it would lose its shape; he has shown Mr Jeans the method of demonstrating the animal nature of sponges; he refers to Pallas's forthcoming book; he describes plants he has received from Pensacola, including specimens of the somo or skimmi of Kaempfer which Linnaeus has called Illicium, 14 July 1766.
