| Description | Letter from David Skene to his father, Andrew Skene, in which he describes journey to Paris ('4 very tedious days' on the coach from Calais); the other gentleman he travelled to France with has helped him obtain lodgings when he arrived; he received a bundle of letters when he visited the bankers; he dines for 18 sols; his lack of French is hampering him; everything is very dear and he believes he is being cheated as well; he has paid 8 guineas for a suit of black clothes (the court was in mourning for the Queen of Poland) which he remarks is 'nothing more than common'; he hates having to sit for two hours getting his hair powdered and curled in order to walk about with his hat under his arm, as is the fashion; he was at Ferrein's lecture which was 'nothing uncommon'; he will carefully observe his father's caution regarding religion and politics but remarks that religion is freely discussed and the topic is often opened by the people themselves, 15 February 1753. |
