Description | Letter from Phineas Mackintosh, Inverness, to David Skene in which he answers Skene's queries regarding town and county [Inverness and the Highlands] arising from Pennant's description; he discusses a barrow which is the third or fourth oldest in Scotland and formerly went by the name of Bail Mhor Chloin Ghadeil; he gives the number of men, women and children in the parish in 1768 and describes how the increase in different trades has changed the numbers in the town; he mentions the effect of the quartering of the military in the area following the 1745 rebellion; he describes the changes to the buildings in the town and the country and lists the chief items that are exported and imported; he describes the agriculture and livestock in the area, 20 June 1777. |
