TitleGordon of Letterfourie: papers relating to Gordons in Fochabers
Date1707 - 1800
Extent3 bundles and 435 items
DescriptionFrancis Gordon of Fochabers and family. Francis Gordon was the son of William Gordon of Kirkhill, probably the second of five brothers. The eldest, John, inherited Kirkhill. George and probably Robert (who died in Paris at the Scots College) became priests, and Francis was surgeon apothecary to the Duke of Gordon. He married ? Ramsay, sister of the Chevalier Michael Ramsay who in turn married Marie de Nairne, a Franco-Scots woman. Francis Gordon had five children who lived to adulthood; Andrew, a surgeon(died in St Croix 1768); Alexander, a merchant (died in Amsterdam 1769); Francis, a sea captain (died probably in Scotland, 1770); and two daughters, Anna and Susanna, who seem to have carried on his apothecary trade to some extent after his death, as well as looking after their uncle, George, in his later years. They moved from Fochabers to live as tenants of Letterfourie at Walkerdales, and Anna was present at the death of James Gordon, 4th laird, but their exact connexion with the Letterfourie family is unknown.
