Sandie poor unfortunate lad, & Frank the honest but unthinking young man have drain’d me dry I yet labour for them, & of course cannot do as I wish … It is yet too soon for me to retire, but if you desire it I will come to Scotland and share my little pittance with you, if not and Providence grants me health, you may depend on an annual tribute such as my trifling earnings will afford’, 14 May 1767
