DescriptionLetters from Alexander Gordon in Madeira to his brother James Gordon of Letterfourie, first, copy letter regarding sending shipment, getting it insured and hoping for a convoy to join for safety, not many ships coming to Madeira for fear of being captured, 25 March 1762; second, letter regarding transactions with the Grosvenor and Captain Partington, scarcity of goods, bills, 12 April 1762; third, copy letter mentioning arrival of the Grosvenor to take load of wine, ‘Captain Partington is ashore with me and I think him a good, genteel sort of a Young Man I expect no rest nor quietness during his stay here he is so beseigd by followers, two Ladys his passengers are also at this house’, 30 March 1762; copy of above letter of 12 April; fifth, letter with list of bills [enclosed] scarcity of wheat, flour, butter and salt fish, a vessel formerly taken by the French has fallen into their hands, planning to fill her with rum for Ireland, sending wine by her to St Kitts to George Gordon, Mr Bailie there is still interested in sharing a vessel to go between Madeira, St Kitts and Virginia, 18 May 1762; sixth, letter regarding transactions with the Grosvenor, that convoy is delayed so he can write further, Mr Lamar and family are returning to England, thanks for letters arrived by the Winchelsea, the Truelove and the Royal Duke, shipments of wine sent, ‘The Royal Duke retook the King of Prussia Brign. from Georgia to London’, and brought the cargo to Madeira, pipe of particular wine on board now for James’ friend who put them in touch with Captain Partington, 12 May 1762
