DescriptionLetters from Alexander Gordon in Madeira to his brother James Gordon of Letterfourie, first, copy letter regarding continued anxiety over late ships, news on stock coming soon, the privateer in the harbour is condemned but another has been seen, the new wines might not be as good as expected, 8 January 1762; second, letter acknowledging his, possible new customer, plans for shipping, buying wine from the Bishop, anxious about news of current affairs and how they may affect business, probable loss of ship bringing grain and staves which will be very detrimental, 26 [25] February 1762; copy of same; fourth, letter written in haste, bills and orders, shortage of barrels, dinner with Captain Smith of the Clinton, fish and wheat scarce, bills, 28 February 1762; copy of same; sixth, letter regarding being very busy, illness of colleague, wine loaded on the Clinton, more shipped on the Essex, scarcity of salt fish and butter, 9 March 1762; copy of same; eighth, letter to go by a vessel that has delivered bad pilchards and which might well not come safely to port, effects of current affairs on markets, looking forward to arrival of butter and beef, which will sell well after Lent, ridiculous prices for wine, bills, 21 March 1762.
