DescriptionLetter to James Gordon of Letterfourie from his nephew James Duff, London, pleased with news of business from Madeira, return of Sir James Duff, efforts to get influence in India, trying to get money back from Lord Adam Gordon, Gillis has gone to Cheltenham, shipping various goods to Scotland, dealing with north American customers, his father’s jaunt seems to have done him good, Loughnan has had a bad shock and might never be the same again, ‘it’s alleged his illness was occasioned by Chagrin at having lost a considerable sum not less than £5,000 by the failure’, his daughter’s prospects, 3 October 1788.
