| Description | Two copy letters from Alexander Gordon in Madeira to his brother James Gordon of Letterfourie, firstly, regarding list of bills and effect an acquaintance’s wedding will have on his finances, with list of bills, 11 May 1761; secondly, regarding financial transactions, price of wine causing problems, hopes of buying wheat at the bottom of the market, Indian corn and good West Indian beef might sell well enough to help, asking for dressed and undressed flax in some detail, asking for an arrangement with a house in Lisbon for dry goods, shipping wines, further negotiations with Mr Tate regarding dry goods for wines, ‘We have sundry North Americans in port, notwithstanding we have a small French Privateer on the Coast they have all escaped, nor do we hear that anything from that quarter has been taken by that vessel, which is no match for any London ship, being of small force’, glad to receive red herrings if they are cheap, 15 May 1761 |
