DescriptionCopy letter to James Gordon of Letterfourie, London, from Daniel Henry Smith, Madeira, regarding no arrivals from London, vintage is begun and looks plentiful, ‘the governor has appointed Inspectors in all the Parishes on the Southside to see that the grapes are not cut down before the y are ripe’, wine sent to the officers in Boston, ‘in order to blind the American partizans here this is given out to be an order at the disposal of Colonel Dalrymple’, 8 September 1775; letter to James Gordon of Letterfourie, London, from James Duff, Madeira, where no vessels have arrived, vintage is going on briskly, ‘a great part of the wine left in the hands of the natives has become sour the blame of which is in part laid upon some limestone that was last year sold for Geco [gesso], it is we believe true that some wines engecara with some of said limestone were the first that soured but they are not the only wines that have kicked up’, Lord Adam Gordon’s letter is received, 11 September 1775
