DescriptionCopy letter to James Gordon of Letterfourie, London, from James Duff, Madeira, regarding delayed departure of snow for Liverpool, non-arrival of money from Cadiz, problem of lack of currency, improving market for grain and flour, too much fish on the market, trade in flax, hoping for deliveries from America, vintage good in everything but colour and that is improving quickly, vines now very healthy, still hoping to be able to ship the Duke of Gordon’s wine but cannot get a vessel straight to Aberdeen, arrest of a number of locals for ‘caballing to disturb the Government’, funeral sermon to be preached in memory of Francisco Theodor to remind everyone what a good example he was, order for onion seeds from Lisbon as better and cheaper than in Madeira, with directions as to their distribution, the Portuguese have been holding back wine to make the vintage look scarce, problems getting malmsey aboard a vessel and suggested lie to tell to cover that, 1 – 4 June 1774
