Description | The lands of Durn were held by the Ogilvies from the Earls Marischal. Alexander Ogilvie died without issue in 1559 and the lands were divided between his three sisters, one of whom, Margaret, married Thomas Menzies of Kirkhill, burgess of Aberdeen. The lands passed into the hands of the Dunbars, and part came into the Gordon family when James Gordon, 5th of Letterfourie, married Glicerie Dunbar of Durn in 1706. A further portion was purchased by Alexander Gordon, 7th of Letterfourie, after the bankruptcy of James Dunbar of Durn around 1780. |
