Administrative History | The Wellcome Foundation Medal (renamed the GlaxoSmithKline Prize in 2002) of the Royal Society of London was established in 1980 to recognise original contributions to medical and veterinary sciences. The prize, established initially by means of a donation from The Wellcome Foundation Limited, consists of a gold medal and a gift of £2500 and the recipient is called upon to deliver an evening lecture at the Royal Society. It is awarded biennially.
Hans Kosterlitz received the award in 1982 in recognition of his studies of the action of opiates and the discovery of the enkephalins. His prize lecture, 'Opioid peptides and their receptors' was delivered in London, 15 December 1982. |
