Description | Six copies of coloured lithographic print of pencil sketch by 'W.J.C.' of bearded gentleman on deck, leaning against the side of a ship, H.M.S. Helicon, in the Mediterranean. All rather foxed. 1873 H.M.S. Helicon, launched in 1865, was a dispatch vessel, a wooden paddle steamer which for part of its service joined the Mediterranean Squadron. In 1873 it may, however, have been in the Channel Squadron. It was involved in the seizure of the Suez Canal in 1882. Though one crew list is available, there are no W.J.C.'s on it and the subject has not been identified. |
