Title | Gordon of Cluny: correspondence relating to unknown or multiple estates, 1789 - 1950 |
Date | 1789 - 1950 |
Extent | 164 volumes, 233 bundles, 57 items |
Description | Correspondence related to the running of Cluny estates. Partly consists of several series of letterbooks, partly of bundles of answered incoming correspondence, and partly of sundry and unidentifiable correspondence. The bulk of the letters are from the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth. |
Appraisal | Because the majority of these volumes had lost their covers and were in poor condition, it was decided not to retain all the correspondence. Two series were returned in their entirety to Cluny Castle (series MS 3600/1/15/3, cash letter books, and series MS 3600/1/15/4, clerks' letterbooks). Three other series were sampled: MS 3600/1/15/1, letterbooks of Ranald Macdonald, where 3 out of 82 volumes were retained (the year 1882 was chosen as the volumes were in better condition than most); MS 3600/1/15/2, registers of incoming letters, where 9 volumes were retained from 1882 and from the First and Second World Wars; and MS 3600/1/15/4, letterbooks of Ranald R. Macdonald, where the 8 volumes selected covered most of the First World War. All volumes not selected for retention were returned to Cluny Castle. |
