Letter from George Garden to Lady Leys. London, 24 April 1714.
Dr Arbuthnott has spoken to the Bishop of Sarum and others on the state of the family of Leys, though he says he has no money laid up and was not in circumstances to buy an estate,'that he was resolved to mortify eight bursaries for the Marischal College of Aberdeen four of theology and four of philosophy, and to take Mr Burnet his nephews advice about the settlement of the stock for it'; a visit to the bishop's house in Clerkenwill, when he regretted Sir Thomas's death but could not help; a proposal had been made to him to buy Muchal and Cowie but he had no money to by land and that he never saved £25 a year from his bishopric; writer also doubts that Dr Arbuttnott will be able to offer anything in this unseasonable time; one of the Bishop's daughters married the previous week; does not know what side he will take in case of writer's brother; both Houses to go to the Queen that day with address on the peace.
Also containing letter from George Garden to Sir Alexander Burnet, same date. Little expectation of help from London; the Bishop not a good enough manager to lay money by.

Major William Burnett to Mrs Burnet, his wife. London, 6 may 1699.
Financial difficulties; needs money to return home and so cannot bring the table and stands unless he can get credit; will send the glass and stands if he can, but chairs just as good can be had in Scotland; was at the play the previous week to see the Rival Queen, with a new actress taking part of Roxana, and asks recipient to guess who this was. She 'acted that pairt most miraculousie to the admiratione of the wholl house by clapping evry word shee spo'ke in which I was verry instrumentall. Ellixe Lloy'd was the womane whom I spo'ke too that same night upon the stage behind the skreins I did abuse her but shee cry's and I durst not insist least it should spoill her acting'

Letter from J. Skene to Dr Melvill, his cousin, at Carlile. London, 1 December 1716.
Has spoken to Lord Stair in receipient's favour, who recommends him ' even more then I could expect from a man of his character' though the order for the trial cannot be recalled; Mr Secretary Methven does not think that the Prince will hinder the trial in spite of Stair's letter, though he does not believe that many of the prisoners will suffer ?[death} unless very aggravating circumstances were found; suggests procuring a witness if his testimony will mitigate the crime.
