DescriptionMajor William Burnett's papers, 17th century. Including: Testament dative and inventory of Jean Kirkwood, daughter of deceased Gilbert Kirkwood of Pilrig, 1662. Com. Edin.

Memo in hand of William Douglas, advocate, headed A platforms for making and keeping clean the houses, streets, wynds and closses of the toun of Edinburgh". A stent to be imposed and the proceeds to be usd to purchase land to be used for "sterculins" [middens] to collect dung in various parts of the town; suggests sites for these; poor people to be employed to keep the town clean, each of them to be issued with a wheelbarrow, rake and shovel, along with a handbell to ring at every stair and turnpike foot; they are to be paid a reasonable salary for this, perhaps £12 per year, with £30 for each horse; suggests that this service would cost annuallt about £3000, and this would be defrayed by sale of the muck and a yearly composition; one of the baillies is to sit once a week to correct abuses and the constables are to oversee the scavengers, undated.
