Date27 June 1915
Extent3 sheets
DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, 7 Via Venti Settembre, Rome, to her relatives, regarding the last Sunday of the season; being affected by the heat and insect bites; the fleas are particularly bad this year; Uncle is not bothered by them; her illness has helped persuade Uncle that they should not holiday in Italy; Aunt suggested Chamonix; Dr. Brock was persuasive and showed him how simple the journey was, changing at Aix-les-Bains; the scirocco changes character there and is pleasant; Uncle agreed that they should enquire about hotels there; water is bad and food is very expensive in the heat; Uncle is unaffected by the heat, though Mr. Gibson thinks that that is simply the effect that Rome has on him - he never stops complaining elsewhere; Maria could do with a rest from them all; if Uncle suffered as Aunt does things would be simpler; tax bills and new taxes; Uncle must send back part of his salary because he was not at Pontresina and the church's takings have been very low; difficulty in staying healthy on a decreased salary; Uncle has been to Leghorn for Mr. Scott's ordination; Miss Jazdowska is being duplicitous over first aid again [There were Jazdowskis associated with teaching and art in Aberdeen: James Bronislas Jazdowski, son of John, teacher in Aberdeen, graduated from Marischal College in 1856 and according to an annotation of the Search Room student list died in Rome in 1902]; Uncle has again committed them to social events even though the season is over; Dr. Brock is to come and see her regarding advice for the summer and her own illness - possibly Roman fever.
