Date25 April 1915
Extent2 sheets
DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, 7 Via Venti Settembre, Rome, to her relatives, thanking Aunt Amy for postcard and news of deaths in battle; further conscription in Italy; government being stern with public grief; less and less official news; public riots expected on Labour Day; Lord Howard's decree that if Italy goes to war the Prussian and Bavarian ambassadors must leave the Vatican; the Pope objected but Britain insisted; his belated messages of sympathy to Belgium and Poland; Dr. Brock says she came first in the first aid exam; his offer to find her a place as a nurse; she declined, and hopes to continue with music all summer as they seem to be going to stay in Rome and so will Mr. Green; places in both Switzerland and Italy unsatisfactory for visits; bread in Rome growing worse; Fenisia can analyse the contents of the bread; safer to tell people that nothing has been arranged for the summer; Miss Cotterill may be able to practise music with Mme. B., which will improve matters for her; consignment of Gospels arrived safely but in bad condition from soaking with sea water; Mr. Walker is not upset, which is not a good sign of his gratitude for the gift; Amelia offered to help with fixing them and ended up doing all the work as Cordano could not be expected to do that kind of thing; most of them have been saved and will be sent to Avezzano.
