DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws to her relatives, regarding Aunt's cleaning of a milk can, their mutual despair over the food, the dishes always taste of onions, the food is making them ill and sleepy, the food in the town is excellent and abundant and there is no excuse for the food in the Diaconess' hospital, church so cold she had to leave early, the foundations are the problem, and the church is sited just where the Moselle divides (small diagram to demonstrate), the foundations are damp, the site used to be that of a pretty garden, the Jardin d'Amour, the Germans have changed the character of Metz, the ramparts were taken down to build on the moat the Kaiser Wilhelm Allee, now the Avenue Marechal Foch, the statue of Kaiser Frederich III has been removed from the end of it, diversion of the river Seille, the tanneries where it used to run no longer exist, the Germans also changed the water supply for the town in order to furnish water to their barracks, Mlle. Perpignan never learned German although the town was under German authority for 50 years, amusing anecdote of her treatment of a German officer, their treatment of the locals, the people of Lorraine must undergo French military training before they can really be French, massage for Mlle. Stoufflet, she has cracked three ribs, massage of an incurable patient as the doctor wanted to make more money out of her.
