Date5 December 1920
Extent2 sheets
DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws to her relatives, regarding no important news, the room next door to theirs is being cleaned for a new occupant, perhaps a sign of new uses for the hospital, mention again of Dr. Collanerie's projected research institute, which was stifled by the older medical practitioners in the area who look on the French as incomers, the younger doctors have learned a lot from the war, and the use of 'intensive methods of war centres, where specialists were grouped together', the result of the local reluctance to progress has led to the French building a new hospital in the mining centre at Briay, so Metz has lost all the patients it used to have from there, it has three ambulance cars and modern equipment, the middle class patients go to Strasbourg or Nancy for treatment, there is too much medical information now for one man to hold it all in his head and specialist centres are needed, Dr. Collanerie is x-ray specialist for Plantieres and bacteriologist for Metz, case of a woman wrongly diagnosed with tuberculosis, referred to in an earlier letter, Mme. Remy at Plantieres has contracted diphtheria from a patient, Mlle. Guyard has a suppurating throat and Mlle. Stoufflet has had a severe fall, Amelia will have to massage her leg and back, Mme. Christen has fallen on her cellar steps and needs further treatment, she has declined two more villas, Mme. Brunel has been to ask Mme. Christen if Amelia has discussed choir affairs with her, price of the villa Mme. Christen declined, with heavy tax, difficult to know where to go next.
