DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, Bergstrasse 33, Dresden, Germany, to her relatives, regarding good weather; beauty of spring trees; Frau Oeser has expanded her pension; the Polish neighbour has moved and has been replaced by a mother and daughter, the daughter a music student; practice arrangements are satisfactory; Frau Oeser has her wits about her financially; Dresden is full of Americans and Australians; it is a lovely city; their rooms are to be taken perhaps by a German officer and his wife who wish to give up their own establishment; many who are wearied by the social round seem to like to move into a pension, where they cannot have guests to stay; society only means giving hospitality to those who can return it; visit of the Berlin choir and orchestra to perform St. John's Passion; Herr Pfannstiehl does not like their arrogance; the performance is to be in the Frauenkirche; Uncle wants them to go to Sterzing as soon as possible; he fears that all the accommodation will be full; Aunt does not wish to retain Oscar in Rome if she goes there for the winter, and he was 'a handful at Brixen'; trying to find a new maid, perhaps Babina Cotti who was in the Schweizerhof and would have gone to Rome with them before; she speaks English, German and Italian and is hardworking, honest and kind; English-speaking servants are hard to find, as most go into shopwork; Babina is Swiss; Mr. Johnstone of Falkirk has been in Rome; Lady Aberdeen is to attend a Women's Congress there; Miss Moir has been left an annuity of £150 by Sir .. Ogilvie Dalgleish; Luise Pfannstiehl is much better and is to go to the seaside with her Swedish family for the summer.
