DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, Chambéry, to her relatives, regarding arrival at Chambéry; the flat is extremely satisfactory; full description of it; she is spending quite a long time at work, as she has 13 patients, 3 of whom require double massage; 12 are allowed full liberty to go out, which leads to more contented patients; they are eager for massage as long as it does not interfere with their expeditions outwith the hospital; many had a holiday on the 14 July to see Boursier, one of the patients, being decorated; Loreau, another of her patients, has a wife and child in Chambéry and considers it his right to go to see them every day, so she has to argue with him over that; he has a bad arm injury, with missing bone and a still-open wound; he also has several fractures of the arms and legs, with the radial nerve partly torn; he is going to Grenoble to have the nerve mended; Dabadie has had 30 pieces of shell extracted from him and is also an arm case, with an open wound still on his shoulder; he had bandages all over when he first arrived in November, with ten drainage tubes in the shoulder alone; he gives amusing descriptions of this time, which is a wonder; Boursier is a case of two frostbitten feet with all ten toes removed causes her most distress; another has the big toe removed and two others damaged; Boursier had spent seven days up to the thighs in mud in a shell hole with his head down; one case with an amputated leg is a skeleton and needs all-over massage.
