Date26 March 1916
Extent2 sheets
DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, 7 Via Venti Settembre, Rome, to her relatives, regarding Miss Petersen's plans to go to Switzerland (she is director of the Y.W.C.A. International Home) and how these have involved Uncle in a complicated business to establish her nationality; information from Baroness von Hahn; Miss Petersen is to take over guardianship of a niece, and hopes to go on to Germany; Miss Nevin, who has come on from Florence, hopes to fill Miss Petersen's place; Milne Rae has provided some information regarding Mr. Crozier, who turns out to be a Baptist; he is a friend of the convener of the Continental Committee and thus got the post; Henderson has adapted the rules after some input from Laing, Blake and Uncle; Miss Cooke is no longer wanted and the regulations are supposed to make her see that; it is not a very fair way to get rid of her, but a fair way would have led to Henderson's resignation, which might well happen anyway; Henderson is too despotic; he is just the treasurer but has too much power; legal wrangles to get rid of the caretaker and his immoral ways; diplomacy is just self-serving deceit; Miss Wall has asked for 200 testaments, but only 100 have been given, and those on condition that individual soldiers' names are written inside them; return of Madame Poitet from Frascati; she arrived the day Hale Benton was going over the church accounts, and Uncle considers her a pest; Mrs. Brock has asked for Amelia's cake recipe in order to send it to the cook at Udine; weight of letters; the remaining soldiers in Rome regret that the soldiers' club is closed; Miss Jazdowska is using the balance of money remaining to fund her Red Cross sewing party [There were Jazdowskis associated with teaching and art in Aberdeen: James Bronislas Jazdowski, son of John, teacher in Aberdeen, graduated from Marischal College in 1856 and according to an annotation of the Search Room student list died in Rome in 1902]; thanks for letter and news; Mr. Green much better this week.
