| Administrative History | In 1936 Mary Esslemont was one of a small medical party to travel into Russia. She attended a large medical conference in Cracow, 27 - 31 August, and afterwards, appears to have proceeded to Moscow with a few of her fellow delegates, spending a day in Warsaw, en-route. The Russian trip appears to have been intended as a forum to meet other health professionals and gain an insight into the Russian health service, however it also included opportunities for socialising, including trips to the theatre and opera. After spending some six days in Moscow, the group travelled to Kharkov and Kiev, spending a few day in each city, before returning to Britain via Warsaw and Berlin on the 16th September. |
| Description | Lecture describing the trip from Warsaw to Moscow, experience of Russian customs, of hotels in Moscow, the greyness of the streets and of people's clothes, old buildings being replaced by new, the vibrancy of the Moscow theatres, and meeting the Russian Minister of Health with Dr Agnes Bennett of New Zealand. Also, gives a brief account of the Russian health service, in which each child is allocated to a specific doctor who sees them regularly during their first three years, where the medical clinics also serve as a health education resource, and where provision is made for dental treatment. |
