| Administrative History | Harry Gordon Slade, FSA, trained as an architect, and worked as an architect and inspector with English Heritage. He has undertaken extensive research and published several works on the architecture of the castles, stately homes and vernacular buildings of the north east of Scotland. As a member of the Scottish Vernacular Buildings Working Group, he makes regular contributions to their annual publication 'Vernacular Building'. Other printed works include 'Glamis Castle' (London: Society of Antiquaries of London, 2000). |

| Description | The collection comprises plans, drawings, papers and printed articles produced by H. Gordon Slade, relating to the architecture of towns, villages, castles, stately homes and vernacular buildings, principally (though not exclusively) of the north east of Scotland, 1971-2001. Places represented by plans and drawings include: Allerton; Arbuthnott House; Artamford; Balbithan House; Beldorney; Brampton Bryan Castle, Hereford; Broughton Castle; Carnousie; Castle Fraser; Cluny Castle; Craigston Castle; Druminnor; Fetternear; Fyvie Castle; Gairloch; Glamis Castle; Greenmill, Dumfries; Lickleyhead; Midmar Castle; Old Tain; Ormeclett Castle; Postern Park, Tonbridge; Rothiemay; Samson Houses; South Erradale; Tillycairn. There are also plans of the parish kirks of Aberdeen, St. Nicholas; Cupar, St. Michael; Dundee, St. Mary; Edinburgh, St. Giles; Edinburgh, Greyfriars; Elgin, St. Giles; Haddington, St. Mary; Linlithgow, St. Michaels; Perth, St. John the Baptist; St. Andrews, Holy Trinity; and Stirling, Holy Rood. | Related Material | Simpson Collection (Sim). One of several named library collections maintained by the University, this valuable resource represents the working collection of Dr. W. Douglas Simpson (1896-1968), archaeologist and University of Aberdeen Librarian, who was an authority on castellated architecture, particularly in Scotland. The collection contains all his works as well as inscribed copies from scholars in the same field. It consists of some 250 mostly interleaved and annotated copies of his own very numerous publications and related material, plus c. 150 pamphlets. There are also 5,500 glass lantern slides used in his lectures, approximately 1,750 postcards, and large-scale plans of buildings, produced in the course of his investigations.
The Simpson Collection is complemented by several deposits of W. Douglas Simpson's personal papers, relating principally to his research and publications on Scottish architecture and archaeology (MS 2229; MS 2230; MS 2285; MS 2398; MS 2498; MS 2729; MS 2818; MS 2910; MS 2968; MS 3042; MS 3442).
