Extent1 volume
DescriptionTypescript of diary with title page "Abyssinia: Southern Frontier Expedition. No. 3: 1903 Jan. 17 Camp Odo to 1903 Feb. 3 Camp Boku"

The typescript begins with the entry for 17 January 1903. There is evidently a gap (volume 2), as the typescript resumes in mid-sentence with the heading "Continued". The account opens with a description of a dispute between the Italian representative, Count Colli, and Archibald Butter, resulting from an incident while hunting, and leading to a discussion of the history and purpose of the expedition. The expedition is joined by another member, Captain Philip Maud. Conference with Dagafu and other Abyssinian officials who have been hindering the party's activities; Baird explains that they are there on the Emperor's orders and the Emperor has requested them to make the map. Disputes with the Abussinnian members of the party continue throughout the journal. Description of attempts to map out the Boran districts. On 26 January it is decided to split the caravan into three parts to assist the surveying; Baird continues with Butter along the river Daua.
