Description of Baird's participation in the mission of Lieutenant-Colonel John Lane Harrington to Addis Ababa as Her Majesty's Agent to the Emperor. Baird describes sailing from Aden to Zeyla, where a train of camels and mules is being assembled by Harrington. Details of the preparations for the journey to the White Nile and on to Fashoda. On the journey, Baird describes the local inhabitants and their customs, the changing appearance of the districts they pass through, day-to-day events on the camel train and in camp. He also comments on current events, in particular the progress of the Boer War. At Harrar, there are discussions with the British consular agent there and descriptions of the merchants and other Europeans in the area, as well as a description pf the market. The camel train reaches Galamso on 16 December 1889; Baird and other members of the party spend the day hunting.
