DescriptionPrinted papers: official despatches and reports

1. Printed despatch from the Governor of South Australia to the Secretary of State on Northern Territory affairs, June 1891; foolscap, 7 pages.

This despatch describes Lord Kintore's journey through the Northern Territory, recapitulates the history of colonisation in those territories, and discusses the problems standing in the way of further growth in the territories. Lord Kintore identifies the shortage of labour as a major difficulty. He points out that the area has an essentially tropical climate and suggests that lifting some of the restrictions on the immigration of Chinese labour would be a possible solution. As things stand, the territory is a burden on South Australia's finances. Lord Kintore also discusses the desirability and difficulties of constructing a railway between the two existing railheads, at Pine Creek and Oodnadatta, a distance of 1227 miles (which Lord Kintore and his party were able to cover in 38 travelling days).

Four copies; two marked "Confidential" in red ink and one marked "Lord Sudeley from K." Some manuscript corrections to names in the text.
