| Description | Journal of Jonathan Troup: January to April 1792. He is settled in Cromar.
The county in general think his charges extravagant but he refused to lower them. Further comments that he charged too much were dismissed by Troup as 'being raised by the opposite party' He mentioned meeting Archibald Farquharson of Finzean and talks of how his estate was managed 'Coldstone' was still using Dr Stewart instead of Troup and sending Dr Stewart to other sick folk He treated Mr Maitland for a stomach nervous complaint He read Scots Recuil (Edinburgh 1789) and quotes from it He treated children with chincough He compared Newton's life to Cromwell's and quotes in French from Voltaire He quoted from a letter telling him his cousin was cured of madness by a doctor in Turriff A pencil sketch of Dover Castle Glenkindy's children came for removal of air for chincough. Troup stated he will have nothing to do with them without the express request of their parents He gave the price of goods: eggs cost 2 pence per dozen He remarked that business is quiet and almost non-existent He described means of payments in Sweden He received letter from Mr Cromar, Schoolmaster at Nigg near Aberdeen He described Russian traditions regarding beards He copied out material from Horace translated by David Watson of St Andrew's College and finished by S Patrick LLD editor of Answorth's Dictionary and Henricus' Lexicon He treated a girl suffering from cold. Her condition worsens until she is almost despaired of He wondered whether to settle in Cromar and remarks that he 'can have no good employment here without drudgery'. This is a recurring theme throughout the rest of the journal. He received news from East India He got a mote in his eye which he was only able to remove with a woman's tongue A poor man passed, seeking money A man was found dead on Cairn o' Mounth and Finzean's gardener was found face down in a rivulet He spent his free time in music He treated a poor man who has lingering fever or cold He gave a Spanish description of complete beauty (source unknown) He gave pencil sketches of Dover Castle from the east and Dover Rock He treated a case of Iliac Passion but the patient died. Troup is later blamed for keeping the dead man's wife away from him in his last hours His aunt Elizabeth died of a colic He treated a man with colic He treated a woman with violent breaking and throwing up He made notes from 'A Tour through the Highlands of Scotland and of Hebrides Isles in 1788' by John Knox (London, 1787) He gave a long poetic description of the weather |
