TitleLord Hailes to James Beattie from Newhailes
Date30 October 1778
Extent1 Item
Administrative HistoryDavid Dalrymple, Lord Hailes [1726-1796]. Lawyer and historian, living at Newhailes, near Edinburgh. Enthusiastic supporter of Beattie and his writings. He succesfully persuaded Beattie to be a candidate for the Chair of Moral Philosophy in Edinburgh in 1774
DescriptionNot surprised at Beattie's partiality for poem at the end of the collection ['The Hermit']. Still misses Brutus ['The Triumph of Melancholy'] in the collection. No poetical merit can justify a poem that alludes to the Hays at Loncarty, which is a fable ['Ode on Lord Hay's Birth-day']. He is considering publishing an edition of the Parerga of Arthur Johnston. Fear Latin will become a dead language. All that will be left be a little knowledge of french literature under the nonsensical title of Belles Lettres. Most of the infallible teachers of our times have died in the space of a few months. Friends of religion should take advantage of the stage being cleared
