Long letter from former pupil praises Essay on Truth and Minstrel. Believes Edwin's character drawn from Beattie's own childhood. Scenery from Howe of Mearns. 'Craggy cliff' on top of Hill of Garvock. 'Pensions, posts and praise' refers to Hume, and allusion in another place to fine embroidered coat in which Hume was painted by Ramsay
