Date18th century

Administrative HistoryJane Maxwell, Duchess of Gordon from 1767, when she married the Duke. The nature of the relationship with Beattie with her is problematic, and one aspect of Mrs Beattie's mental disorder was thought to be the intense jealousy for Beattie's attachment to the Duchess
DescriptionSecond part of a letter to the Duchess of Gordon, enclosing a communication [? possibly MS 30/2/395] from [?Thomas] Jervis, evidently and apology of some sort in respect of certain verses; Beattie writes that it 'may be termed the first chapter of the Lamentations of Mr Jervis'. Beattie also refers obliquely to 'important and mournful occurrences' in the Duchess's neighbourhood and expresses his sympathy with those concerned. Undated [c. 1783 if the connection with MS 30/2/395 is correct]
