Administrative HistorySir William Mayne, later Lord Newhaven. Beattie first met Sir Mayne and Lady Mayne on his visit to London in 1773, probably at Mrs Montagu's house. Sir William was an Irish member of Parliament. He became Lord Newhaven in 1776. The Maynes quickly became close friends of Beattie and were among the main promoters of the scheme to publish Beattie's essays by subscription
DescriptionBrief report of meeting the King. They had been invited to dine with Majendie at Kew, to come before noon for a particular reason, which was that the King had asked to see Beattie. Had an audience of upwards of an hour. The King very gracious. Has only had to wait for Treasury warrant and then leave town
