Administrative HistoryThe King family of Tertowie, Aberdeenshire, included General James King, Lord Eythin (c. 1589-1651 or 1652) of the Swedish Army; William King (1650-1729), Archbishop of Dublin; and Colonel William Ross King (1822-1890) who was a member of the 74th Highlanders. The family was formerly seated at Barra Castle and Dudwick, Aberdeen.

DescriptionLetters and papers relating to the history of the King family of Tertowie and their ancestors the Kings of Barra. The collection includes: four legal documents concerning Alexander King and James King, 1508, 1553, undated and 1619; Papers relating to General James King, Lord Eythin, 1628-1651; Papers relating to Archbishop William King of Dublin, 1680-1880; Rental of Barra, 1776; Letters and papers relating to various members of the King family, chiefly clergymen and army officers, 1820-1947; Genealogical papers, principally relating to Kings of Barra, 19th to early 20th century; Printed material relating to the South African War, 1851-1901; Miscellaneous offprints and printed material, 1721-1918.

[The majority of the collection consists of nineteenth-century letters and papers, reflecting the distinguished military careers of several individual members of the family. Of the earlier papers, those relating to Archbishop William King of Dublin have already been noted in Historical Manuscripts Commission 3rd Report (1872), p.416.]
