| Description | Two letters to him from his quarry tenant, Al Smith (of 2 July 1807), and his ground officer, James Donald (of 11 July 1837), at Rubislaw, Aberdeen. Smith, who had been turned out of his tack of the quarries at Rubislaw, and become involved with Mr Gordon, Skene’s factor, in a legal process, asks to be allowed to lease a park and quarries thereon which had been part of John Kemp’s tack to enable him to build a house there for himself and family. He was also willing to rent the Den quarries which had failed ‘compleatly’ if permitted to employ men to work on parts not previously quarried. James Donald, ground officer, defends himself from charge of having influenced Rubislaw tenants during the recent parlamentary election, although admitting ‘I was very much annoyed with some of the canvassers who used language to me that irritated me a good deal’. having influenced Rubislaw tenants |
