| Administrative History | Alexander Chalmers was the son of James Chalmers, printer and publisher, and founder of the Aberdeen Journal. After graduating A.M. at Marischal College he went to London to pursue a surgical career but opted instead for journalism and literary studies. Chalmers contributed to many literary periodicals and edited three London newspapers, but he distinguished himself most of all with his contributions to the General Biographical Dictionary. He died in London in 1834.
