Description | Account book containing details of monies spent and received during the professorship of James Gregory M.D. in the University of Edinburgh.
The volume summarises income earned over groups of years and shows how lucrative his professorship proved to be. Costs included coals, advertising of classes, paying for staff including an assistant under janitor, dues on behalf of students, class tickets, hire of gowns and a third share of the expense of his commission as first physician to the King (eleven pounds, one shilling and one pence). His income was comprised of his salary, income from students, examination fees and income from clinical lectures. In 1814 to 1815, his costs amounted to seventeen pounds, 2 shillings and sixpence while his income was one thousand five hundred and twenty seven pounds, five shillings and sixpence.
