Description | Letter from James Gregory to George Gregory in which he asks him to pay the account to Mr Evans & Co. with the money enclosed and to inform his aunt, Mrs Palmer, that the account is paid; no Bank of England notes to hand so will send £1 in a few days; has bought new carpet for a 'large and handsome' additional building at Canaan Lodge; remarks that George Gregory is entitled to tell him in the words of Horace 'tu secanda marmora locas sub ipsum funus et sepulcri immemor struis domos' ('on the very brink of the grave you contract for the cutting of marble slabs, and forgetful of the tomb, you build palaces'); asks for receipt for the payment; asks him to call at the Secretary of State's office to collect the warrant appointing him first physician to the King in Scotland; presumes that William Pulteney Alison will have told him about the nature and peculiar circumstances of his illness and states that he is better but still miserably weak; asks him to send the enclosed item to Dr Ashley Smith, 6 February 1821. |
